让你见识下：这才是中国该有的教授 -- 先有自尊后有南海 2011-09-15 01:05 #2
I had lived both in Japan and the US and I can you from personal experience that what this professor had said are all true. The Japanese actually have quite a big inferiority complex when it comes to America and the Europeans. This is because they respect power and strength and despise weakness. They respect you more if you don't speak Japanese. So the professor is right that you'd get more respect from them if you speak English with them even if you can speak Japanese. This is human psychology. The Japanese had in past history admired Chinese for their advanced civilization. This is why in the past the Japanese educated class speak almost exclusively Chinese and the more Chinese characters a book contained the more cultured and erudite it was considered to be. I also remember one story in my own life decades ago when I was still very young and living in Japan. I went to a Japanese book store that sold English language books. While I was browsing, the store owner noticed that I carry a Chinese book. He was impressed that I could read so many Chinese characters. The reason why the Japanese have so much contempt for the Chinese now is that the Chinese have become cowardly and dishonorable and poor and technologically backward. Therefore, the best way to impress the Japanese and establish friendly relationship with them is to defeat them in a war and show them that China is overwhelmingly more powerful than they are. Then we can treat them kindly thus earning their eternal loyalty and allegiance or as long as China is dominant. Unfortunately, nothing is eternal.
I'm sure most Chinese people have read the story about Kong Ming 孔明 who captured 孟获 Meng Huo 7 times thus earning his undying loyalty. Chinese people keep thinking that other peoples will accept Chinese as friends if they just show themselves as virtuous and peaceful people. Which is why the Chinese government keep emphasizing that China's development is peaceful. But no peoples in the world will respect you if you are poor and weak even though you are peaceful. This is just human psychology all over the world to despise weakness and respect strength. Therefore, China will fail if it relied on friendship and peacefulness to win other countries' respect. In the end, it is all about power. Fortunately, as I've always said, China has the greatest potential to become the richest and most powerful country in the world. But China can only become rich and powerful by relying on itself to develop its own domestic economy and not by relying on selling cheap labor and export cheap low tech products.
