Sino-France Treaty of 1887 assigned Nansha to China

China and France signed a treaty in 1887 defining the border between China and Tonkin (North Vietnam). While this treaty was mainly concerned with defining the land border between the two countries, it did mention "isles" which are to be delimited by the meridian 105d 43m east of Paris. Since Paris is situated at longitude 2d 20m east of London, 105d 43m east of Paris corresponds to 108d 03m east of London. The treaty defined all "isles" to the east of this meridian as being "assiged to China." Since Xisha A. and Nansha A. are all to the east of meridian 105d 43m east of Paris, this treaty effectively and conclusively verified that all the disputed archipelagos belong to China. Therefore, Vietnam cannot claim any of these soveign Chinese territories by invoking succession from France.

Of course, China does not need this treaty to claim sovereignty over S. China Sea archipelagos. China had established soveignty over S. China Sea archipelagos by the incorporation of these archipelagos in its administrative map since the Tang Dynasty in the 8th Century AD which ipso facto is sufficient to establish Chinese sovereignty over these archipalagos without anything else. However, it does destroy Vietnam's claim of sovereignty based on succession from France. Since France had by a treaty assigned the S. China Sea archipalagos to China it could not have had legal sovereignty over these isles and therefore Vietnam could not legally succeed to them from France. This means Vietnam's claim to sovereignty through succession from France is baseless. Therefore, while China's claim of sovereignty is unaffected by this treaty, Vietnam's claim of sovereignty is totally destroyed.

I give below a direct quote from this treaty:

The isles which are to the east of the meridian of 105° 43' longitude east of Paris, which is to say of the north-south line passing through the eastern point of the island of Chagu [Tch’a-Kou or Ouan-chan (Tra-co)] and forming the border, are similarly assigned to China.
